8/15 - 8/19
Thank you all so much for your hard work in getting this year started off well. Your students have come in everyday excited to learn new things and practice showing virtue to others. Below you will find a preview of what we will be focusing on this week.
Spalding: This week in Spalding we will begin practicing our cursive handwriting. We will start by talking about why we learn cursive, and then we will spend the week practicing our formations. When helping your student, please remind them to sit in a scholarly position, have their letters sit on the baseline, and practice forming their letters carefully. Also, to refresh their minds, please continue to have your students practice their phonogram cards. We have learned 1-70. There is also a Spalding Phonogram app that is helpful in hearing the sounds.
Math: In math this week, we will be identifying number patterns. We will be plotting numbers on number lines and reviewing methods for rounding and approximation. Nightly homework will be a worksheet.
Language Arts: We will begin diving into our language arts curriculum this week. Every week your student will be given a passage to familiarize themselves with. They need to read it nightly and answer questions pertaining to the passage. We will begin practicing character identification, sequencing, and creating summaries.
Literature: This week in Literature we will begin reading the classic novel, The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White. We will be reading a chapter a day, in class, and the scholars will then be expected to read that same chapter at home while answering provided questions pertaining to the chapter.
History: This week in History we will be continuing our study of the continents and their various features. We will cover 1-2 continents per day and will have a quiz over the continents and oceans on Friday. A study guide will be created and handed out by Wednesday the 17th for them to fill out and study.
General Classroom Needs:
All students will need four Wide-Ruled notebooks - a red, dark blue, green, and the Spalding Notebook (Sold by Spalding which can be ordered at http://store.spalding.org/p-24-intermediate-spellingvocabulary-notebook.aspx ) These four are required for class work and should be purchased and brought to class if you have not already done so.
Two folders are required at this time, one green and the other blue. The green is for homework. The other folders (one orange folder and one purple folder) will be used for subjects and for take-home work.
We also request packets of Wide-Ruled loose-leaf paper for our classroom.
